Destination Wedding Photographers

So you've decided that you want to plan a destination wedding. Congratulations! Destination weddings can either be more stressful than a local wedding, or - if done right - significantly less stressful. One of the most crucial factors of planning a beautiful destination wedding, is the destination wedding photography. Unfortunately, almost every wedding photographer from Cleveland to Colorado claim that they're "destination wedding photographers".

So how do you know if you've connected with a "real" destination wedding photographer? Here's a few questions to ask yourself (and maybe even your "destination wedding photographer":

1. Have you shot destination wedding photography before?

As mentioned before, there are a lot of wedding photographers in Cleveland, Colorado, and pretty much everywhere else, that claim to be destination wedding photographers in hopes of one day growing their business into an internationally known, in-high-demand destination wedding photography boutique. Unfortunately, what that means is that it's now easier to pick the wrong wedding photographer (especially for your destination wedding). Simply asking whether or not they've actually served as a destination wedding photographer will sift through all of the less qualified wedding photographers.

2. Have you been a destination wedding photographer for a while now?

Destination wedding photography, like any other art form or trade, is a skill set that gets refined with time - and can often times take years to hone. As a destination wedding photographer you need to be on top of your game - 110% of the time! As an outdoor beach wedding begins, you might need to make quick adjustments for the gusts of wind that have suddenly started blowing off the ocean. Or perhaps a flock of seagulls (the birds, not the band) decide to camp out directly behind the chuppah obstructing your shot... how will you handle it? A seasoned destination wedding photographer will have dealt with these things (or similar) and will be able to calming find productive solutions.

3. Have you ever been a destination wedding photographer at our specific wedding location?

This may seem like a silly question to ask - and if the answer is no that shouldn't automatically disqualify the destination wedding photographer that you're talking with. That said, here's the advantage to working with someone who had photographed a wedding at your destination: with every exotic location around the world comes different travel hiccups, customs standards, travel necessities. Working with a destination wedding photographer that has been through these things can help to make sure there are less potential mishaps on the day of your wedding.
